Athena is so pleased that an Amazon has become one of the leaders of the gods that she offers to help me with, well, everything. The Amazons are at my disposal and she has a list of all the things I have to do first. She’s even created a place for me to reign, a temple of my own to dispatch underlings and make proclamations.

I’m grateful for her help, but it’s not me. I sit on a golden throne in a room without a floor. Instead clouds carpet the ground...soft and beautiful. Lightning bolts decorate the walls. It’s very, very Zeus.

Also, it was only made for one god. Not three. It’s weird to sit on a throne while Alaric and Zahara are next to me on metal folding chairs. They don’t look too happy about it, either. But I’m still teary-eyed over Mama picking a man over me (again). I don’t feel like being Athena’s favorite is going to sit well with the other two, but my mind—and heart—are still reeling. I’ll sort it out with them later.

We were given a little time to clean up after Alaric ordered the zombies away, but then our break was over. Athena came marching in along with a whole bunch of advisors, and my new Amazon guard. Apparently, they’re like the Amazon equivalent of the Secret Service, which I guess makes me the president.

It’s weird.

Athena begins to quickly run down all the threats currently facing the world. First all the rogue gods who’ve been running wild and doing what they want. We gotta stop that nonsense, but the gods are, of course, going to question our authority, especially since we split Zeus’ powers three ways. They’re not used to that, and are going to push back, Athena warns us with a scowl. I know she’s not happy with me for choosing to split the powers, but I can’t find the energy to care about her feelings right now. I’ve got a world to run.

The humans are not accepting the presence of paranormals on their planet very well, and in true human fashion, they’ve been doing everything they can to fight them. Apparently silver bullets are in high demand and garlic is now a cash crop. Normally regular people wouldn’t stand a chance against all the supernaturals, but there’s enough in-fighting on the paranormal side for the humans to have something of an advantage, Athena explains.

“Divide and conquer,” Alaris says under his breath.

Apparently all the lesser supernatural creatures have been grappling for power. The fae and vampires are engaged in a full-out war against one another, with the Midwest as their main battlefield. Shifters have moved into packs, some of them meant just to protect themselves with safety in numbers, but others are much more destructive—fatalities among humans that stand against them are high. Also, a group of evil witches and warlocks have seized several Canadian cities. Athena rolls her eyes at that last one. “They swear maple syrup has mystical powers beyond anything on the planet, but no one really believes that.
